“Everybody was Kung Fu fighting” at the Northmead Square, on the morning of Saturday, July 13, and spectators were treated to a display of various martial art forms by the Benoni-based Shaolin Kung Fu School.

The school was started by Rena Kessa in 2007, when she brought Shifu Xinshen, who trained in the Shaolin Temple in China, to the country.

The school has a particular focus on helping disadvantaged children and attempts to keep them off the streets by teaching them the discipline that is required to do martial arts.

Shaolin Kung Fu School currently teaches the ancient art to 20 disadvantaged children from Daveyton.

“I have seen the effect that drugs have had on young people in Benoni and believe that, by giving these children a sense of belonging and purpose from a young age, through martial arts, we can make a difference in their lives,” said Kessa.

She thanked all the sponsors who assisted with the demonstration and Checkers Northmead Square, who sponsored lunch for the children.

One of the youngsters from Daveyton, Mbali Sikhosana (11), said she likes martial arts, as they teach her to defend herself.
