Country Club helps youngsters get ahead

Benoni Country Club hosted the launch of the GASP (Get Ahead Sports Programme) from September 25 to 27.

GASP is a national talent harvesting plan, designed to celebrate and advance “noticed” children, particularly from compromised contexts.

The programme also took place in Port Elizabeth and Soweto during the school holidays.

The GASP initiative brings to life a unique, three-day event, during which underprivileged pupils engage with an expert coaching team from the key service providers for GASP, namely exercise and conditioning leadership from Virgin Active, and sport coaching from Cricket SA and Tennis SA.

The pupils participated in tournaments, skill acquisition sessions and a variety of active, learning challenges.

The first crop of identified pupils (11 to 12 years old) from the Benoni region were selected from Geluksdal Primary School, Graceland Primary School, Ntokozweni Primary School, Pheasant Folly Primary School and Thabotona Primary School.

Nedbank Motor Finance Corporation funded the programme in the Benoni region, while Benoni Country Club provided the facilities.

The programme departs from the “Move-It, Moving Matters” programme, which introduces sport into schools in underprivileged areas and was developed by Dr Claire Nicholson, a doctor of education.
