A briefcase full of laughter

The mishap of a man mistakenly taking home the wrong briefcase from a train translates into the brilliant, farcical theatre production, My Vrou Se Man Se Lyk Se Tas, which is currently showing at Emperors Palace.

The production, which has been translated from the London hit, Funny Money, is guaranteed to leave you in stitches, regardless of the mood you were in before stepping into the home of Chris van Niekerk, who plays the role of the protagonist, Henry Perkins, and his jittery wife, Lulu Botha, who plays the role of Jean.

The couple start the production on Henry’s birthday, which he is not too concerned about, due to the discovery of his newly found fortune.

Henry insists on immigrating to Barcelona the moment he sets foot in his house and assures Jean that the money will not pose a problem and that it won’t be found on them by the person from whom it was taken.

Things quickly turn sour when he bribes police officer Paul Lückhoff, who plays the role of Detective Davenport.

Before long he bribes another police officer, Detective Slater, played by Botha Enslin, who rocks up at their home with the news that Henry is actually dead, identified only by the contents of his briefcase (which was mistakenly taken by the man whose briefcase Henry has).

The rest of the storyline makes for interesting viewing as each character takes on a different identity when confronted with the two officers, in order to save the couple from raising too much suspicion.

The show will be on stage until October 27, at Emperors Palace.
