SA Rhinos thumped in Brakpan
A small crowd of spectators gathered at the Bosman Stadium on the night of Friday, October 18, to witness the South African national rugby league team, the SA Rhinos, in action against touring Australian team, New South Wales (NSW) Country League.
The visiting team proved too much for the South Africans, a team made up of mostly Tuks-based players, and ran in 11 tries to thump the Rhinos 58-18.
NSW centre Ben McAlpine and winger Jason Raper each bagged hat-tricks for the Australian side to take a 32-12 lead into halftime.
Rhinos halfback Hans du Plessis dotted down in the 32nd minute and Jean-Di Oosthuysen went over before the break to give the home team something to show for their efforts.
The visitors added 26 more points in the second half, to put an end to a dominant performance.
The Rhinos bagged a try through Shaun Bouwer, to give the home support something to cheer for in Brakpan.
South Africa Rugby League (SARL) officials, despite the heavy defeat at Bosman Stadium, will reportedly fly to Britain this week to push their bid to host the 2017 World Cup, with the aim of growing the sport in the country.
