Ebotse accused’s bail hearing postponed

Magistrate Ian Cox today postponed the bail application, heard in the Benoni Magistrate Court, of the man accused of shooting dead two men in the Ebotse Golf and Country Estate on October 31.

Double-murder accused Retief Liebenberg will appear in the same court on November 15 for the continuation of his bail hearing.

He is being remanded at the Benoni Police Station until his next appearance.

Liebenberg allegedly shot dead his daughter’s boyfriend, Dewalt “Poenie” Visser (20), and his father, Dewalt Visser Snr (46), at the accused’s home at Ebotse.

The accused’s advocate Marius van Wyngaardt read the accused affidavit in court today (Friday).

In the affidavit, Liebenberg stated that he was severely provoked by both Dewalt Visser Snr and Poenie at his residence before the shooting.

He was also allegedly attacked by both men before the shooting.

According to an affidavit which was filed on behalf of a clinical psychologist who consulted Liebenberg, he has been under severe stress since 2012.

This emanates from his daughter undergoing rehabilitation twice and the fact that his daughter recently dropped out of university.

The report stated that Liebenberg is severely traumatised and is suffering from an acute stress disorder.

The funeral for Poenie and his father was due to be held in Bonaero Park at the Christian Family Church today (Friday).
