Teenager involved in hit-and-run accident

A teenager appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Tuesday, and was expected to appear again today, in connection with the death of a CMS patrolman.

He was due to be charged with reckless and negligent driving, culpable homicide, driving without a licence, and failure to stop and render assistance  after an accident.

Benoni SAPS media liaison officer Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the patrolman was knocked down by the car in the early hours of Thursday morning (April 17), on O’Reilly Merry Street.

She said the patrolman, who was in his 40s, was the road trying to remove a hobo from the road, when he was knocked down.

The man’s colleague apparently tried to warn him of the approaching car, but could not warn him in time.

The teenager handed himself over to police on Thursday.
