Smith well on his way to national title

Young Benoni rider Slade Smith (13) continues his quest to retain his SA National MX title in the 85cc Class.

He has been racking up successes since March, when he won Round Two of the Motorsport South Africa (MSA) GOC Junior Off-Road Race, in Parys, in the Junior 85cc Class, followed by a second overall place in the 85cc Class at the MSA MX Nationals, in Cape Town, where an unfortunate puncture in the second heat denied him a first place.

Smith then achieved a win at the WOMZA MX National Round Two, in Cape Town, in the 85cc Class.

He also managed a fifth overall in the Pro Mini Class, at the same event.

In May he again tasted victory, when he won the MSA Natal Regional MX, at Springfield, in the 85cc Class, and a fifth position in Pro Mini.

At Round Three of the WOMZA Regional MX in Pietersburg he won both classes, followed by another win in the 85cc Class at the MSA National MX, at Springfield, and a second place in Pro Mini, in late May.

Smith continued his winning run in early June, in the 85cc Class at the WOMZA National MX, at Teza, in Richards Bay, accompanied by a second place overall in the Pro Mini.

He managed the same results in both classes at the WOMZA Regional MX, at Terratopia, in late June.

At the MSA Pietermaritzburg National MX, in early July, the youngster achieved a win in the Pro Mini Class and placed third in the 85cc Class, following an unfortunate fall.

He then moved on to East London for the WOMZA National MX leg, in mid-July, where he won the 85cc Class and came fourth in the Pro Mini Class.

Smith won both the 85cc and Pro Mini classes at the WOMZA Regional MX, at Dirt Broncos, in Johannesburg, on Saturday, August 2, followed by a second overall at the MSA GOC Round Four, in Villiers, the following day.

His excellent form saw him selected by MSA for the FIM Junior World MX Championships, that will be held in Belgium, but he has chosen, rather, to again travel to Mini O’s, in Florida, in the USA, instead of the World Championships, which take place in November.
