Flavour, aromas … a feast for all the senses at Curry Leaf

I haven't eaten at the Curry Leaf for a while and a recent visit reminded me of just how much I had been missing.

Launched five years ago, Curry Leaf in the Cocoa Bean Centre (entrance in Sixth Avenue) is owned and run by husband and wife team Jackie and Aasha Budhia, assisted by family members.

As we approached the restaurant, we were greeted by fragrant aromas and, anticipating the wonderful spicy dishes, redolent with flavour, got the juices in my mouth going.

As we relaxed in the ambience of Indian tranquility my guest and I nibbled at the little poppadum pieces with tasty dips as we chatted and decided on our starters.

I selected the chilli paneer (Indian cheese lightly fried with curry leaves and a chilli spice blend) and my guest opted for lamb kebabs (minced lamb marinated in a special spice blend) as something different from our traditional choice of samoosas or chilli bites.

My cheese was soft and delicious, the little curry leaves giving it a nutty flavour.

My guest, Nicolette Geyer, declared her kebabs tasty, dipped in the accompanying sauce.

Then it was time for our mains — we both were feeling fishy and went for prawn and chicken korma (in my case) and fish and prawn curry for Nicolette.

My korma, with the mildly spiced creamy curry, really hit the spot and went well with the vegetarian curry I chose as an accompaniment.

The prawns were firm, the chicken tender … just like they should be.

Nicolette thoroughly enjoyed her fish and prawn in a tomato-based curry, served with Basmati rice.

Vegetarians will feel at home with the varied selection available.

And, good news for regular diners are the two new specials, which definitely appeal: curry lamb shank or lamb chump chops served with potatoes and rice (both dishes are subject to availability).

We enjoyed our pleasant, relaxing, tasty and satisfying meal.

The restaurant is fully licensed.

A takeaway menu is also available. HG
