Man shot in front of wife and children during hijacking

A man died shortly after being shot in his car, while sitting next to his wife and near his two young children, in a Chief Albert Luthuli Park hijacking last night (February 11).

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the incident happened as the couple returned to their Botswana Street home after attending church in Mayfield, Daveyton.

“They came back from church and stopped at the gate to their house,” said Sekele.

“The 12-year-old son got out of the car and opened the gate for his father when suddenly a silver VW Polo stopped behind them.”

The three occupants jumped out of the car and approached the driver’s and passenger side of the family’s white Corsa Lite.

The armed man, standing on the right-hand side of the vehicle, stuck his gun through the half open window and fired his weapon, hitting the 38-year-old husband and father in the upper body.

Sekele said the shooter opened the car door and dragged the victim out of the car.

The hijacker on the passenger side of the car, who was not armed, demanded money and a Blackberry cellphone from the victim’s wife.

“She got out of the car and pleaded to take her four-year-old son out of the car,” said Sekele.

After she had taken the child out, the gunmen jumped in the victims’ car and sped off.

The hijackers also drove off in the car they arrived at the scene with.

Sekele said the father died on scene.

The woman and two children were unharmed.

A case of murder and hijacking has been opened.
