Local DJ aims for Ibiza
According to Axe and Black Coffee, Daveyton resident Kutloano ‘Da Kruk’ Nhlapo (29) stands a chance to be Mzansi’s next big DJ.
The AXE ‘Find Your Magic’ campaign is aimed at finding talent across the country and exposing him/her to the world.
Nhlapo is among five finalists competing to be sent to Ibiza with Black Coffee, which will be announced on August 31 at Taboo, in Sandton.
BCT: How long have you been a DJ?
KN: I started DJing in 2005 to pass time during holidays and to keep me out of trouble.
Before I knew it, I was made mixes for friends and started playing at bottles stores, taverns and birthday parties in and around my hood.
BCT: Are you self-taught or formally trained?
KN: I am a self-taught computer DJ, but a friend of mine, who owned equipment (CDs and Turntables), got me started.
I had a vision and took it a notch further by putting mixes together while at a tertiary residence.
I passed mixes out at a residence and worked my way into campus radio and now regional radio.
BCT: Tell us about your passion for music and when it started?
KN: I have memories of coming home after school and doing what my dad used to do for his friends – for my friends: introducing them to new music and putting me in control of how music changes people’s moods and energies.
I remember doing a prepared English speech telling people I’m going to be a DJ when I grow up.
My peers laughed at me, which made me even more determined to succeed.
BCT: How do you feel about playing on the same stage as Black Coffee?
KN: Black Coffee’s story is one that inspires me because before being the musical pioneer of our time, he was a young boy, who overcame all odds (socio-economic and physical disadvantages).
He did this by putting in the hours and acknowledging that true craft takes time.
BCT: If you win, what are you looking forward to the most in Ibiza?
KN: Playing the hottest set that I’ve ever played and grabbing the opportunity and experience that comes with being in the Dance Mecca of the world and the industry’s leaders that I will be exposed to.
I also look forward to being exposed to various networking opportunities to ensure that this will not be my last time in Ibiza.
