Africa Day celebrated at Sibikwa Arts Centre

Africa Day (May 25) was celebrated at Sibikwa Arts Centre on May 26, where young and old gathered to enjoy a day of drumming on the premises in Liverpool Road.

“The main goal for the event is celebrating Africa Day with a drumming festival featuring Ahenfu Cultural Edutainment,” said marketing manager Bongani Yende.

“The day started with a welcome for guests from the Sibikwa marimba band playing outside.

“Then everybody was welcomed into the theatre and all drummers were sent to the workshop rooms.”

The beginners’ workshop was in the drumming room and facilitated by Mokhalinyana Mokhere.

The intermediate group did African dance and body percussion and rhythm in Gazata with Thabo Rapoo.

After the workshops were concluded, the groups had to perform and present what they learnt in the workshops.

The day saw the attendance of children from Kids Haven, Sibikwa Creative Arts learners, Sibikwa Saturday Arts Academy learners, Prestige College Crystal Park School learners and their principal, Mrs Sebotsa.

“Sibikwa drumming facilitators and a few up-and-coming and well-known drummers from Ekurhuleni also chose to be part of the day,” Yende explained.

“There were about 200 people who attended.”

The significance of the event encouraged cultural exchange, up-skilled drummers, celebrated Africa Day and showcased Sibikwa’s junior and senior drumming ensembles.

“It was a day full of pure, uninhibited, joyous music making and dancing to the sound of the African drums and its infectious, primal beat and rhythms,” Yende said.

“It is the best way to celebrate Africa Day.”
