Gallery: eThekwini Mayor bestows SA Navy with top honour

The Right of Entry Parade saw the SA Navy march through the city in a ceremonial gesture with swords drawn and bands playing.

THE streets of Durban lit up in a parade when Mayor Cyril Xaba bestowed the SA Navy with the Freedom of the City honour.

The ceremonial honour, also known as the Right of Entry Parade, took place on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street over the weekend.

The event formed part of a three-day programme aimed at raising awareness of hydrography and strengthening the long-standing maritime partnership between the City and the armed forces.

Through this honour, the mayor grants sailors permission to march through the City with swords drawn, colours flying, drums beating, and bands playing.

In return, the SA Navy reassures the mayor and residents that its weapons are not intended to threaten citizens, but to protect the City’s shores, ports, and maritime interests.
