DURBAN is set to turn purple on Sunday as a record 15 000 runners descend on Hollywoodbets Kingsmead for the sixth edition of the Hollywoodbets 10km which sets off at 07:30.

Race pack collection opened today at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, which was a hive of activity. Scores of runners lined up from 10:00 for goodie bags, consisting of their race numbers, a heritage-style T-shirt, socks and a bucket hat.

Zinhle Msomi, who arrived at Greyville around 12:30, said it was a quick and easy process. “The queue was long but moved pretty fast. There were plenty of people helping behind the desk. There are also a number of help desks for those experiencing problems. I loved it, I cannot wait for Sunday.”

Msomi will be among the record-breaking 15 000 runners, both elite and social, who will paint Durban purple for the sixth edition of the race, which includes a 5km challenge.

Among the elite athletes racing for the finish line are Tayla Kavanagh, Neheng Khatala, Stephen Mokoka, Thabang Mosiako and Karabo More.

Hollywoodbets ambassador and double world rugby champion Makazole Mapimpi will fire the starting gun, while Sharks legends Odwa Ndungane, Lwazi Mvovo and Tera Mtembu take on the 5km.

Keeping the energy high will be Senzo ‘DJ Nzwiri’ Buthelezi.

The race will be broadcast live on SABC 2. Race pack collection will continue on Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday, from 10:00 to 16:00. For more information, contact the Race Office on 083 501 7006.
