eThekwini reopens North beaches with immediate effect

The City closed North, Bay, Battery, Country Club 1 and 2, eThekwini and Laguna beaches to the public on January 5.

The eThekwini Municipality has re-opened the seven beaches it closed yesterday as they are deemed safe for bathing and all sporting activities.

This comes after the City closed North, Bay, Battery, Country Club 1 and 2, eThekwini and Laguna beaches to the public on January 5 due to a discharge of ‘very abnormal’ murky water from the Umgeni River.

The City’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said all of the beaches that were closed yesterday have been re-opened with immediate effect.

“According to the results, water is free of any pollution that may pose threat to life. The water was murky because of hyacinths naturally found in water. It usually increases during summer months,” said Mayisela.
