‘Most vibrant’ Festival of Chariots prepares to paint beachfront in rainbow

The Sunshine Chariots parade starts the festivities opposite Tropicana Hotel on Friday and the event closes with the second parade, the Sunset Parade, on Monday.

The annual Durban Festival of Chariots descends on the beachfront this Easter weekend. All the colourful action will take place at the Bay of Plenty lawns and the Amphitheatre.

Umesh Prakash, the festival chairperson, said, “The Sunshine Chariots parade will be on Friday, starting opposite Tropicana Hotel on the Upper Marine Parade, proceeding towards Mini Town, going down to the Lower Marine Parade to the festival site (Bay of Plenty). The second parade, the Sunset Parade, will be on Monday.”

“To the property owners, residents, and guests, we humbly request your co-operation and assistance during this spectacular event.” The parade will be managed and controlled by Durban Metro Police and SAPS on both days.

“We would like to extend a warm invitation to all. This year, the preliminary plans point towards the most attractive and vibrant festival to date. The Festival of Chariots has established itself as a major festival of the country, and has assumed a prominent position in the eThekwini Municipality calendar, attracting local and international visitors,” said Prakash.

The chariots parade is on Friday, April 3 at 11:00, and Monday, April 6 at 17:00. There will be an aerial fireworks display on Saturday, April 4 at 21:30. The festival management apologises for any inconvenience that might be caused by the parade and the fireworks display.
