Body found in sea after another tragedy on George cliff road

Numerous fatalities have been recorded on the Voëlklip Road and in the latest incident an unidentified man's body was found in a car wreck.

A man’s body was found inside the wreck of a car at the bottom of a cliff on the infamous Voëlklip Road earlier this morning.

This follows extensive search and rescue efforts by various emergency services after indicators of an alleged incident were reported on Tuesday.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie on Tuesday said that a coordinated effort by rescue workers including EMS, George Disaster Management, the EMS rescue helicopter and the police was launched to see if they could find any wreckage or signs of victims.

Rough sea conditions hampered search efforts since then, but Pojie said this morning that the vehicle was spotted in calmer sea conditions earlier today. Police divers and rescue services went to assess the situation and found the body trapped in the car.

Wilderness NSRI and police divers recovered the body, that still has to be identified.

The road is notorious for numerous accidents that occur on the stretch of road. In February 2021, a task team was established to look at options to address issues pertaining to the road.

The team was established after yet another vehicle went over the edge at Hansie se Bank, approximately 1km from the Voëlklip viewpoint
