Residents raise alarm over unsafe park conditions in Arbor Glade

Arbor Glade residents are calling for urgent action as an overgrown park near the Durban Botanic Gardens becomes a health and safety concern.

Residents of Arbor Glade on Problem Mkhize Road opposite the Durban Botanic Gardens have expressed growing concern over the deteriorating condition of a nearby park, describing it as a major threat to public health, safety, and the overall well-being of the community.

According to resident Vish Makka, the park’s vegetation has become severely overgrown, with municipal maintenance teams allegedly only cutting grass along the roadside while leaving large sections of the area untouched. Residents claim the dense vegetation has created a haven for vagrants, who have increasingly occupied the park.

Community members have also raised concerns about a persistent foul odour emanating from the area. They allege that individuals are using the park for ablutions near residential complexes, creating unbearable living conditions for nearby residents.

“When you hang washing, it is difficult because of the smell of faeces,” said Makka.

In addition to the unpleasant smell, residents say litter has accumulated throughout the park, further contributing to the area’s decline. Many claim the worsening conditions have left them feeling unsafe and uncomfortable in their own homes.

Concerns over crime have also intensified following two attempted burglaries reported in the area within the past week. Makka explained that during the first incident, the suspect was empty-handed, while in the second attempt, the individual fled immediately after being spotted.

“The first burglary attempt, the guy didn’t have anything in his hands. The second time, he jumped out the moment he saw someone,” he said.

Residents believe the overgrown vegetation and poor maintenance are contributing to criminal activity by providing hiding places and easy access routes for suspects.

Attempts to seek assistance from local authorities have reportedly yielded little progress. Residents said they contacted municipal services and were informed that the Parks Department would be notified. They also approached the local ward councillor, who allegedly promised to escalate the matter.

Responding to the concerns, Mandla Nsele, Director of Communications, stated that the area in question is situated on Benson Road above the Durban Botanic Gardens and forms part of the gardens’ property.

“The site receives regular maintenance as part of the Durban Botanic Gardens’ ongoing maintenance programme,” said Nsele.

However, residents maintain that no visible intervention has taken place, while the number of vagrants in the area continues to grow.

Community members are now calling on municipal authorities to urgently address the overgrown vegetation, improve sanitation, remove litter, and increase security patrols before conditions deteriorate further.
