Park gets first owl box

Bulwer Park has had its first owl box installed.

AN owl box has been installed in Bulwer Park, in the hope that it will attract Spotted Eagle Owls.

This comes after a decision by the municipality and WESSA to try encourage the birds to the park to keep down the rat population.

On Sunday a group from the Friends of Pigeon Valley scaled a Natal Elm in the park, and member, David Attenborough, fixed the owl box in place, with the assistance of Rupert Meyer, who built the box.

Residents have been urged by Crispin Hemson, who chairs the Friends, not to use rat poison, as this would kill the predators of the rats.

“The owl boxes will form new points of interest in the park, where usage has been increasing following its redevelopment by the municipality. A second owl box has been completed and will be installed elsewhere in the park,” said Crispin.
