Former Durban Deputy Mayor returns to Local Government

Mark Lowe aims to win a seat on the eThekwini Metropolitan Council, standing in Ward 27 Morningside for the local government elections.

POLITICAL heavyweight and former Durban Deputy Mayor, Mark Lowe, makes a U-turn to Local Government, as he contends for Ward 27 councillorship, under ActionSA.

“I have decided to stop just shouting and criticising from the sidelines and jump back into frontline politics. I’m determined to win a seat on the eThekwini Metropolitan Council and I’m standing in Ward 27 Morningside where the Lowe family has resided in the same property for over a hundred years since 1920! It’s like coming home,” Lowe said.

Lowe is also a former Durban North Ward 36, and then youngest, Durban city councillor for 11 years before heading off to Parliament for a decade.

“My city and metro is far from broken but it’s not in very good shape after too many years of bad political leadership and awful decisions. I’m gatvol and I’ve got the experience, if not me then who?

“I established the Morningside Community Safety Forum 10 years ago and have been extremely active and critical in the community right across the Berea, from ‘Save Our Berea’ to ‘Berea Stories’ and DURBAN – News, Incidents and Events. I am a very active activist!”

Lowe promises to concentrate on four main issues in the ward, but keep an eye out on everything, namely, water bursts and electricity power cuts, Florida Road and surrounding business areas – grime, crime and degradation. Illegal Town Planning issues, the state of Mitchell Park and other public spaces, and the Stables Complex – Geoghegan Cycle stadium, Moses Mabhida and Kings Park swimming pool precinct all need radical attention.
