Women walk for abstinence
UKZN students will take to campus streets to highlight the importance of abstinence.
STUDENTS at UKZN will take part in an abstinence walk campaign, on Friday, 9 August at 9am at the Westville Campus.
Participants in the abstinence walk will take a pledge as their commitment to the cause and walk in solidarity as a show of strength. The UKZN Women’s Forum will also be launched on 9 August at Howard College Campus.
According to HIV/AIDS programme director, Nomonde Magantolo, the aim of launching the Women’s Forum at UKZN during the Abstinence Walk will provide young women with a platform where they can discuss among themselves their sexuality, reproductive health and rights. This will enable them to come up with their own solutions in any challenges they have as young women.
“It will also help them lower the spread of HIV and AIDS, risks of contracting STIs and risks of having unplanned or unwanted pregnancies. This will also help to encourage a culture of empowered and dignified young women with individualistic views, who are trustworthy and aim to achieve greatness,” she said.
A keynote speaker from the Department of Health will address the audience at the walk. Contact Noxolo Batembu or 079 132 4845 or the Campus HIV and AIDS Support Unit office.
