Berea police had a successful week with many recoveries and good arrests.

BEREA police made good recoveries over the plast week.

Warrant Officer D Naidoo and Constable Doravellu were able to recover a vehicle with the assistance of Tracker on Monday. The car was reported hijacked from Reservoir Hills earlier in the day. A case was opened at Sydenham SAPS and Berea crime prevention members found the the vehicle parked in Vause Road. “It was suspected to be parked off for a cooling off period,” said Berea police Communcations Officer Lieutenant PN Naidoo. He added that many hijackers usually leave a vehicle abandoned in a different area and wait to see whether it has a tracking unit and is recovered.

A similar incident occurred on Sunday, 18 August around midday. “A man was assaulted with the butt of a firearm on his head when his vehicle was taken in the vicinity of DUT near Ritson Road,” said Naidoo.

A case of hijacking was opened and Berea SAPS were investigating and with the help of Tracker they were led to Chesterville where the vehicle was later recovered by crime prevention members, Sergeant T James, Constables Venketas and Doravellu and Warrant officer D Naidoo.

Security gate motor recovered and man arrested

On Sunday, 18 August between 3pm and 3.30pm a security guard who was patrolling on Musgrave Road was informed that a man had stolen a gate motor and battery at a premises on the road.

“The security guard called his control room to report the incident, described what the man was wearing and gave chase. With a description of the man, police responded and identified the suspect further down Musgrave Road,” said Naidoo. They arrested him and found him in possession of the gate motor and battery.

“People need to put a burglar gated cage with a padlock to prevent easy access to the motor and battery. Members of the community also need to be alert and work together to make sure criminals don’t get away with crime,” he added.

Shoppers need to be aware when shopping, warn police

Berea police warn shoppers to be extra vigilant when shopping after a pick pocketing incident last week.

“A store detective noticed that a man had pick pocketed a women’s cellphone from her bag and contacted the police while they were still in the store. Police arrived Women need to ensure their bags are closed and close to them at all times,” he warned.
