Walk to protect wildlife

The Durban community is being given an opportunity to walk and raise funds for the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation project.

MORE than a year after his death, local world-renowned conservationist, affectionately known as “The Elephant Whisper’s” legacy, ambitions and hopes for a kinder future, lives on.

The Durban community now has the opportunity to play a part in making one of Dr Lawrence Anthony’s ground-breaking projects reach finality by participating in the Walk for Wildlife initiative.

Images of injured, blood covered men, doe eyed starving children and landscapes filled with destruction as a result of war, pull on our heartstrings. But what of the innocent animals caught up in these man-made wars.

In every war, the lives of animals are inconsequential. Dr Anthony realized that unless it was made law, humans would never take responsibility for the animals they had put into captivity, and thus was born the draft resolution to the United Nations.

The Wildlife in War Zones draft resolution was written with the aim of protecting captive animals and marine reserves in times of war, making the wilful destruction of captive animals and their keepers a war crime. Many facilities with captive wildlife have endangered or threatened species in their care, and their protection is often vital to the survival of that species.

The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization has endeavoured to finalise the passing of this resolution into international law. The organization has already submitted the resolution to the United Nations and now has to carry out the remaining steps, as well as lobbying the UN and negotiating with the International Criminal Court.

In order to raise awareness and funding for this project a fun walk is being held on the 29 September. The walk, which is less then 5km, starts at 8am at uShaka Marine world and follows the promenade, ending at Suncoast Casino. Tickets are on sale through Computicket for R60, and free entry to children under 10.
