A SUNDAY filled with clear skies, happy people, bowlers, braai, and live music. This was the mood at the Berea Bowling Club when local clubs challenged each other for charity.

The Kurten Bowling Challenge, a brainchild of Shelley Kurten, was not just a day of bowls; it was a charity affair aimed at raising funds for the Highway Hospice. Indeed, the support paid off, and by the day’s end R6000 was raised, topping last year’s R4500.

Kurten, delivering the second edition of the event, said she could never thank Highway Hospice enough for taking care of her late husband for over two years while battling cancer.
“When I was going through that period, Highway Hospice never asked me anything, as they rely largely on donations. This fundraiser is my way of giving back.”

Highway Hospice CEO John’o Olds said, “We are over the moon, so pleased with this charitable gesture by everybody who played their part. The sporting clubs and their supporters, Shelley Kurten, and the Berea Bowling Club, have demonstrated a positive spirit of giving back.”

Olds added that as more people need hospice care, they rely largely on events like this.
Bowlers from across Durban clubs and local supporters sealed the day with an afternoon of raffles and entertainment.
