Man held up in Burman Bush

Dave Bolton who was held up in Burman Bush wants to warn others to be alert of the possible dangers when walking or cycling through the reserve.

KENSINGTON resident, Dave Bolton has issued a warning to residents who use Burman Bush Nature Reserve to be vigilant after he was held up at gunpoint about 50m from the entrance gate.

Bolton who recently returned from a 3-week holiday in Cape Town, said the incident occurred prior to him leaving to go on holiday.

“I’ve been walking in Burman Bush for years. It was about 5pm in the afternoon when I decided to take my usual walk,” he said.

“I noticed a youngster walking towards me and thought he was going to ask me for the time, but instead he pulled out a pistol and demanded my cellphone.”

Bolton said he could see the firearm had been cocked, but told the man who looked to be in his early 20s and high on drugs, that he did not have a phone. “He took my I-pod and ran. I was lucky, it could have been worse.”

Bolton said he walked a little further and stood behind a tree and dialled 10111. “I’m still waiting for them to answer my call,” he said ruefully.

Blue security arrived soon after and assisted him further.

“I just want to warn other people to be aware. A lot of people and cyclists use Burman Bush and I want to alert them of the possible danger. I have heard other reports of people being held up in and around this area. I wouldn’t want anyone else to be a victim,” he said.
