Men urged to rise against GBVF in eThekwini
Civic organisations are urging men to lead the charge against gender-based violence and femicide at a Durban demonstration on September 30.
SOUTH African men are being called upon to take a stand against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) by joining a mass demonstration in Durban on September 30.
A Day of Action is being organised by SA First Forum and March and March, which are calling on men to denounce GBVF.
Amid outrage in KZN and across the country over the recent murder of nine women in Gauteng and the rape of 16 women in KZN, the organisations have called on men to lead the march.
At a press briefing on Sunday, the organisations challenged men to take GBV seriously and show their support by joining the march.

“We call upon our brothers across the country to first accept that we are part of the problem. We are either responsible by our actions or omissions.”
Although details of the march are yet to be released, the demonstration will start at 09:00 from Albert Park in Durban. Calling on men to support the call to action in their numbers, the organisations said: “This country needs our strength, our energy and idea. We must rise, unite and say enough is enough. No woman must die under our watch, one death is one too many.”
The call was echoed by KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, who urged improved collaboration between civil society and various organs of state to tackle GBVF in the province.

“Our women are under siege, we have to up the ante and do more to protect all females from such acts of abuse and victimisation.”
He called on society to break their silence when they see a crime being committed against women and children.
“We call upon all sectors of society, law enforcement and government entities to build a stronger united front to end the scourge of GBVF in our province.
“The provincial government stands in solidarity with the survivors and all victims of gender-based violence as efforts continue to strengthen the fight against GBVF across KwaZulu-Natal.”
