Cataract surgeries give gift of sight
Patients received the gift of clear vision thanks to the generosity of the staff at Life Entabeni Day Theatre.
AS has become tradition, the Eye Centre at Life Entabeni Day Theatre carried out free cataract surgeries on 20 patients in celebration of World Sight Day.
Patients from around Durban who were on waiting lists at local state hospitals were selected for the cataract surgery.
There was a buzz of excitement in the waiting lounge as patients sat in anticipation of their treatment. “This is a blessed day and I’m very happy that I’ve been chosen to have this operation,” said patient Christina Biyela. This excitement was carried over to the next day when patients returned to have their check ups. The patients were ecstatic at being able to see clearly.
The day was a resounding success due to the generosity of many people who contributed. Eye specialists Dr Raymond Way, Dr Brian Gundry, Dr Venessa Thunstrom and Dr Matthew Young and anaesthetists Dr Nick Broukaert and Dr Warren Wagner gave of their time and expertise to help give deserving patients the gift of clearer vision. Lenses and stock were sponsored by Lance Steyn and Ryan Elson from Alcon and Carin Gannon from Genop.
Day theatre staff, led by Julianne Wolf each contributed something towards special gift packs that were given to the patients who also received t-shirts and a snack box to take home.
