MOTORISTS who use the demarcated bus lanes will face a fine of R350. That’s the warning from Metro Police Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi who said the bus lanes were under constant camera surveillance and any motorists caught using the bus lanes would face a steep fine.
Msomi said cameras were being used to monitor the bus lanes because they are increasingly being misused. The bus lanes were introduced as part of the city’s Integrated Rapid Public Transport System to facilitate the smooth flow of public transport. However, more and more motorists are using the demarcated lanes illegally. Msomi said only emergency service vehicles were allowed to use the bus lanes when responding to an emergency. The lanes are for the exclusive use of buses and taxis.
The bus lanes can be found on the M4 Southern and N3 freeways coming into and exiting the city.
