Local school choir strikes silver on international stage

The St Henry’s choristers delivered a 22-minute performance at the Summa Cum Laude International Choral Competition.

Durban’s St Henry’s Marist College High School Choir recently returned home victorious, securing an impressive sixth-place finish and a Silver Medal at the Summa Cum Laude International Choral Competition.

Hosted at Sun City, the event marked a historic milestone as the first time this global competition has been held on African soil. For the St Henry’s choristers, months of intensive preparation, early morning departures, and meticulous vocal discipline culminated in a high-stakes, 22-minute performance on the international stage.

“Competing against a formidable field of elite schools, provincial, and international choirs, the St Henry’s singers proved that Durban’s local talent can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world. Beyond the competition itself, the tour served as an unforgettable educational and cultural exchange.

“Bringing home a silver medal is a proud achievement for St Henry’s Marist College and a direct reflection of what young people can accomplish through dedication, focus, and collaboration. The choir returns to Durban with broadened horizons, valuable expert feedback, and renewed artistic energy,” said Tessa Swart, Head of Advancement at the school.

Students attended masterclasses and workshops led by distinguished international adjudicators, gaining direct insight into advanced choral technique and musicianship while connecting with fellow young artists from around the globe.

“This milestone sets an exciting new benchmark for the school’s music programme. As the choristers look toward future competitions, they remain committed to striving for excellence and continuing to represent both St Henry’s Marist College and the broader Durban community with pride on the global stage,” said Swart.
