Burman Bush walk well supported
The richness of Durban’s trees was explored at Burman Bush.
AUTHOR of Trees of Eastern South Africa Richard Boon, recently led a large group of local residents through Burman Bush where he explained the characteristics of the rich diversity of trees in the area. A short walk took participants to a wide range of trees, some uncommon.
The event was part of the WESSA-eThekwini Municipality tree labelling project. Focused primarily, but not only, on indigenous trees, the project aims to have labels on significant trees across the Metro.
“There has been a surge of interest in local trees; what is a bit bewildering is the sheer complexity that comes with Durban’s great biodiversity. These events give people a chance to start the fascinating process of understanding the trees and their links to bird, mammal and insect life’, said Crispin Hemson, chairperson of the WESSA Durban Branch. The next event will be atPigeon Valley in Glenwood at 9am on Saturday, 14 December. It will be led by Johan Bodenstein, well-known expert in indigenous plants.
