No play until May as Moses Mabhida pitch shuts for repairs

The iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium’s playing surface is off-limits until April 30 as major rehab work gets underway.

THE eThekwini Municipality has announced the temporary closure of the Moses Mabhida Stadium pitch, which is under refurbishment,  until April 30

The 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium is undergoing a multimillion rand upgrade that will see the return of the sky car and exciting addition of features such as a view deck and multicolour lighting. Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the closure of the pitch was due to essential rehabilitation.

“During this period, the pitch will be temporarily closed to allow for critical maintenance and recovery work,” said Sisilana. “This rehabilitation programme is necessary to restore the playing surface to optimal condition and to ensure it meets required standards ahead of scheduled fixtures taking place in May.”

Sisilana said the work forms part of the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining Moses Mabhida Stadium as a premier, world-class sporting and events facility.

“All other stadium operations will continue as normal during the rehabilitation period. Stadium tours, retail outlets, and other visitor facilities will remain fully operational,” added Sisilana.
