Radio Boat Club grows its membership

The Durban Radio Boat Club elected its new committee at an AGM on Sunday.

THE Durban Radio Boat Club held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday at the Pond, near Blue Lagoon.

At the AGM, Commodore Peter Heathcote was due to step down, but was voted in for a second term. Peter said 2013 had had many highlights, amongst which were the reopening of the Pond on 17 March, the club’s participation in the Lipton Cup in July, where it came fifth and which brought a lot of publicity for the club, as well as the national laser champs in November, which were held at the Pond for the first time in three years.

“The club is only as strong as its members, and we now have 70 members, 40 old and 30 new. We have a healthy balance of new blood and experienced members which has created a lovely atmostphere. We also have a great new harbour at the pond which was implemented by member Adrian Le Roux. The club was brought together through the common purpose of saving the Pond, and has gone from strength to strength. I appreciate the effort that went into this ‘fight’ by the committee at the time,” he said.

Commodore Peter announced he wished to get the power boat section of the club up and running in the new year and said there would be some events this year.He thanked Terry Flynn, the secretary of the club, for his work on the website and with communications, and said it was impossible to thank him enough for his efforts.

“I have been proud to represent such a great group during 2013,” he said.

Terry Flynn agreed with Peter, saying 2013 was the most successful year for the club in terms of growth. “The club has seen a steady increase of membership since the open day last March and the small membership has almost doubled in numbers since then,” he said.

At the AGM, the committee for 2014 was elected. The club committee is: Commodore Peter Heathcote, vice commodore, Roy Lorentz, Scale rep, Trevor Cole, secretary and treasurer, Terry Flynn, sailing rep Norrie Taylor and power rep, Henry Morkel.

Before and after the AGM the scale models and model yachts both the Radio Controlled Laser and International One Metre were on display at the club and on the pond.

The club is always looking for more members. If you want to find out more, contact Terry Flynn on secretary@drbc.co.za
