Young climbers ready to compete

DHS boys take time to teach children with disabilities the art of bouldering.

A group of young climbers are raring to start training under the watchful eyes of the DHS climbing team.

DHS initiated a Bouldering Outreach project with a group of Open Air foundation phase learners in 2013.

The idea was to share their talents with the younger pupils who would benefit from climbing training. Benefits for the children included building core strength, confidence, focus, and strategies to do routes even though the pupils live with various disabilities.

The pupils were chosen according to need and the small team of five grew from strength to strength with one-on-one firm, but gentle training by the DHS boys.

With the start of the 2014 bouldering season the little group of learners are more enthusiastic than ever, and it is hoped the U6 group of Open Air School pupils take part in their first School’s Bouldering League.

With the DHS team’s guidance and support they will represent Lsen Schools by climbing two routes each and experience the competitiveness of competing against one another.
