Durban rallies to help Delfi rise from the ashes
The campaign is aiming to raise R300 000 to help Delfi Greek Taverna’s owners rebuild after fire tore through the Windermere landmark.
A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched to rebuild Delfi Greek Taverna with the
community and loyal customers rallying behind the nearly 60-year-old family-owned restaurant.
Delfi Greek Taverna, situated along Lillian Ngoyi Road and Livingstone Road, was ravaged by
fire on Thursday afternoon (September 3). It took eThekwini Fire Services approximately 20
minutes to bring under control the structural fire which already burnt through
the roof.
With the fire extinguished and everyone safe, attention has now turned to rebuilding Delfi. A fundraising campaign, ‘Delfi will rise from the ashes!’, has been launched through BackaBuddy to help get the restaurant up and running again.
Set up by Linda Landzanakis on Friday (September 4), the campaign aims to raise R300 000 for Doddy, Maria and Manuel. She said, “What was once a landmark called EFI Supermarket, became a second landmark being Delfi. It was not only a restaurant, it was a home filled with love, kindness and warmth.

“Their home of 59 years is gone, along with all the beautiful memories. They were left with the clothes on their backs. Please let’s help them to rebuild – together we will ensure that we see those happy, smiling faces in no time at all.”
Her sentiments were echoed by long-time patron Sharl Els. He said, “Our family travelled regularly from Amanzimtoti to dine at Delfi. My parents, Sonja and Graham Els, often celebrate birthday milestones there, too. To see this happen to a beloved Durban institution is very sad.
“There is a donation drive, and I appeal to the community to assist Delfi’s owners, as they have given so much and been a part of many wonderful memories.”
Those wishing to support the rebuilding of Delfi Greek Taverna can donate to the ‘Delfi will rise from the ashes!’ campaign on BackaBuddy.
