College in top form at hockey tourney

Durban Girls’ College are in a league of their own in this region, says the MD for Spar KZN.

HOST school, Durban Girls’ College, dominated the Durban Central Regional of the SPAR KZN regional hockey tournament on Saturday.

College, the defending champions for both their regional tournament and the overall tournament, met three other schools in a round robin format. This is the fourth time that College has made it through to the grand finals and they have yet to concede a goal in the Durban Central regional SPAR KZN tournaments.

In all three games that College played, they scored a consistent five goals in each game, 5-0 against St Henry’s, 5-0 against Maris Stella and 5-0 against Port Natal.

A total of 19 goals were scored in the six games, College netting 15 of those. Seven College girls got the ball into the back of the net, with Kelsy Scott, Caitlin McIntosh, Nicole Koenig and Caroline Meek scoring more than one goal each.

In the final game for College, Port Natal’s goal keeper Samantha Delport performed like a champ, denying the continuous surge from College. Delport stood firm on the line, swatting away the ball with hands, stick and even firmly kicking the ball into safety.

Coach for Durban Girls’ College, Bell Meek, stated: “We don’t have one star player in our team, the girls operate as a fantastic unit supporting each other. Today Caroline Meek showed off her strong finishing skills slotting in five of the 15 goals scored.”

Rob Phillipson, MD for SPAR KZN said: “Durban Girls’ College certainly is in a league of its own in this region. They played well and were a tight outfit that couldn’t be faulted. But the other three teams all deserve a big round of applause for their efforts. I believe that hockey was the winner today with all the young ladies performing well and having fun both on and off the pitch.”

Kylie Oosthuizen from Durban Girls’ College was awarded the Most Promising Umpire award and will be travelling with her team to the finals to ref there.

Durban Girls’ College is through to the finals of the SPAR KZN regional hockey tournament that takes place at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG in July. They are joined by Ferrum High School from Newcastle, Kokstad College and Danville Girls’ High School from Durban North. Ten teams will make up the final with each region having a representative.

The next regional is on Sunday at the Three Schools Trust. Kingsway High School is hosting the Durban South regional.
