City thanks residents for saving power

Residents rallied to the call to cut their electricity usage.

eTHEKWINI Municipality has extended its thanks to residents who reduced their electricity usage during last night’s peak period. This went a long way in reducing the outage experienced in some areas last night.

Parts of Phoenix, Umlazi, Umhlanga, Winkelspruit, Sydenham and Hillcrest were among the areas affected.

Load-shedding commenced at approximately 5.30pm and was halted shortly before 7pm.

Some areas, like La Lucia, did suffer outages longer than necessary owing to overload tripping when power was restored. To prevent this, customers are urged to switch off appliances during power outages.

Eskom has warned that the winter reserve margins will remain extremely tight during peak periods between 5pm and 9pm.

Customers are urged to eliminate unnecessary usage and switch off non-essential appliances like pool pumps and geysers.
