Tip off leads to recovery of copper pipes

Members of the community were instrumental in recovering copper stolen in Morningside.

BEREA police recovered copper pipes in Morningside on Friday with the help of the community.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Communications Officer at Berea SAPS, officers were tipped off about stolen copper pipes hidden in the bushes on Montpelier Road.

“Officers went to the site to investigate and Constable Byron Erasmus and Constable BP Mbanjwa were able to recover the copper pipes with the help of community members,” he said.

Naidoo said theft of copper pipes had become a problem in the area with criminals desperate for items to sell, however, with the help of the public, police were on top of the matter.

“On Wednesday morning a man was arrested for theft after someone saw him take copper pipes off the wall of a house in Morningside and contacted the police,” he added.

Naidoo urged the public to contact police if they witnessed any suspicious people and activity in their neighbourhood.
