Cops nab copper thief
A vigilant community member in Morningside tipped of police to suspicious activity which lead to the arrest of a copper thief last Wednesday morning.
According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Communications Officer at Berea SAPS, the arrest came after the suspect was caught in the act stealing copper pipes.
“A man noticed a suspicious man taking off the copper pipes from the wall of a house in Montpelier Road. He contacted the police when he saw the man load the pipes into a white bag. Our officers were able to get to the scene and arrest the man and recover the 12 pieces of copper,” he explained.
Microwave thief caught by owner
A man was arrested for theft after the owner noticed him carrying the appliance a short distance from her home.
“A woman left her home and was walking along Windmill Road when she noticed a man carrying her microwave, which she had used earlier that morning. She phoned home and confirmed that the microwave was missing.”
The woman called the police and asked the security company to assist in holding the suspect while waiting for police to arrive. The suspect was arrested and detained at SAPS Berea.
Cellphone recovered after police chase
A staff member at a tattoo parlour was lucky to have his cellphone returned by Berea police who chased after thief and arrested him last Friday morning.
According to Lt PN Naidoo, the man was at work in Windermere when a man entered pretending to want a tattoo. “The staff member had his cellphone on the counter when the suspect took it and ran away. The complainant called the police who responded and then chased the suspect who was caught . The cellphone was recovered and handed back to the owner,” Naidoo said.
The suspect was arrested and detained at Berea SAPS.
Bag snatching: one arrested, accomplice escapes
One man was arrested for common robbery whilst his accomplice escaped after a bag snatching incident in Musgrave on Saturday morning.
According to Lt PN Naidoo, a woman was allegedly walking along Musgrave Road at the intersection of Povall Road when she was approached by two men. She was threatened with a knife and her bag was taken. Both suspects fled on foot towards DUT, one suspect was arrested by ADT security and the police while the other suspect escaped with the bag.
