Monkey killer handed over to police

Monkey Helpline made a grim discovery last week at Burman Bush Nature reserve.

A VAGRANT who allegedly lured and killed monkeys in Durban’s Burman Bush has been handed over to police.

According to Monkey Helpline’s Steve Smith and Carol Booth, they were called out to Burman Bush Nature Reserve last week after receiving a distressing call from a resident who had spotted the vagrant killing a monkey.

“We have received many reports of a vagrant who was hunting monkeys at the reserve. The man is well known at the reserve because he always returns after being chased away. A witness explained that he lures monkeys then hits the monkey in the face with a rock. We believe he eats the monkey meat,” said an angered Steve.

The man was caught last week and held by the Nature Reserve officials as they awaited police to arrive.

While at the reserve Steve was shocked to find two smelly orange bin bags which had been dumped at the top of the reserve. “There were flies and holes in the bags and when I opened it I found one was full of baby chickens and the other little ducks that were dressed and ready to be cooked, but rotting away in the bags,” he said.

Steve believed that the poultry had been dumped at the reserve because the culprits thought they could get away with it. “Dumping is a serious problem but this looks like a restaurant got rid of their rotting stock and dumped them here. It is not right,” he said.
