A GROUP of homeless people, believed to be whoonga addicts, were removed from a vacant home on Clark Road by police last week.
The property, which has stood vacant since February this year since the body of the owner, an elderly woman who lived on her own, was discovered in the house a week after her death.
According to Heather Rorick of the Bulwer Community Safety Forum (BCSF), vagrants were creeping into the house at night and had ransacked the property. She said she had alerted the owner, the son of the deceased, to what was happening on the property some time ago.
“He gave us a key for the front gate to check on the house on our patrols. We have had to call the SAPS a few times as we have found the door to the house or the windows open.
“The thing is, there are items in the house which are attracting these vagrants who are taking them and selling them. This has become a nightmare for other residents living in the area, the BCSF as well as to SAPS, as we cannot guard this house 24/7 and these vagrants strike at any time,” she said.
Rorick said there was also no electricity so the house and yard were dark and had become dangerous as patrol units could not see anyone lurking around.
“The owner is aware of this but does not have the finances at the moment to sort out the house and the many problems involved with this property. I have stopped the BCSF from checking up on this property due to the danger to us, as well as on advice by SAPS, who say the owner must employ a full time security guard rather as the situation is dangerous and complicated,” she said.
