A hijacking and burglary took place within minutes of each other in Glenwood on Thursday night.
According to Bulwer Community Safety Forum chairperson, Heather Rorick, a flat was broken into and ransacked at about 5pm in Helen Joseph Road. “Neighbours said four well-dressed men spent around 45 minutes ransacking the flat. They got in by breaking the front door open and according to a neighbour who was home at the time, they were making such a noise that she thought the owner's son was home and that they had people doing repairs to the flat, as they were banging things around and talking so loudly. They got away with jewellery, clothes and an X Box, and had obviously been disturbed, as they left the TV on the stairs. One of the witnesses said they saw two men run away on foot, but they must've had a car to get away with all those items,” she said.
Rorick said while she was standing upstairs on the corridor, sorting this issue out she witnessed a woman in the next road (Esther Roberts) being hijacked.
“We heard screaming and looked over to see the woman being hijacked. We screamed and shouted, but within seconds the hijackers were gone with the car and followed by the getaway car, a black BMW,” she said.
Rorick said the woman had been held up at gun point. “It happened so fast,” she said, adding the car had been recovered in Umlazi.
According to Rorick, all this happened between 5pm and 7pm and while the roads were still busy with people and traffic.
“We have to realise we have to do things to safeguard the area, we can't do this alone,” she said.
