Berea police arrest cellphone thieves

BEREA police came to the rescue of a victim of a mugging last Tuesday evening.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Berea SAPS, Communications Officer, the man was walking along Botanic Garden Road when he was threatened by a knife-wielding suspect who demanded his cellphone.

“Another suspect grabbed the phone and tried to run away but failed when a police official arrived on scene and grabbed him,” said Naidoo.

The 26-year-old suspect was arrested for robbery with a weapon.

The next morning, while walking on Musgrave Road, a woman was approached by two men who threatened her with a knife and a screwdriver. “One of the suspects grabbed her cellphone and ran away and the police was called. They arrived quickly and gave chase and arrested one suspect and recovered the phone which was handed back to owner,” said Naidoo.

Man arrested for damage to property

A man was arrested for malicious damage to property in the early hours of Saturday morning after he was seen breaking a bottle on a car.

According to Lt PN Naidoo, the complainant parked his car outside a Florida Road hotel and noticed a man breaking a bottle on his car causing damage.

The man called the police and the 18-year-old suspect was promptly arrested.

Be crime aware

BEREA police encourage people to lock all doors and windows at night.

Lieutenant PN Naidoo said many community members are still leaving windows open for their pets, which could compromise their safety.

“Please try to light up your yard so that any movement by some one can be noticed. Even during the day whilst at home keep all trellidoors locked so even if the door is opened the gate is locked and nobody can enter,” he advised.
