Taxi strike halted

Taxi drivers not striking say police, despite community fears.

DESPITE fears of a taxi strike and violence in the Durban CBD, police confirmed this afternoon that motorists had no reason to be alarmed as the problem was averted.

A police officer at Durban Central SAPS confirmed that there was no strike or violence in the city.

“There was a meeting with some taxi drivers in Pinetown and they were planning to come to City Hall with a memorandum for the Mayor, however this was not permitted by the Mayor.

“The drivers were intercepted by police before they reached the CBD at Commercial Road and asked to disperse,” the officer said.

She added that there were no reported incidents of violence.
