Security guards arrested for theft
Umbilo SAPS officers recovered stolen copper goods to the value of R20 000 last week.

TWO security guards were arrested for theft in Hannah Road last week.
According to Sgt Beverly Manqele from Umbilo SAPS, officers were patrolling in Hannah Road on 28 August around 4.55am when they noticed a man on foot near the Umbilo Congella Sports Club carrying a geyser.
When he saw the police vehicle, he dropped the geyser and ran off. The police chased him and apprehended him and took him back to where he had dropped his loot.
When questioned on where he had got the geyser, the man didn't want to answer. The police went with him to the sports club where they came across an on-duty security guard who had been working with the man. The police searched the premises and found compressors, geysers and an air conditioner stored on the property.
The men took the police to Hannah Road and pointed our where they had stripped the geyser off the building while guarding it. The owner had noticed water leaking and identified the geyser as his.
The men were arrested and charged with theft. The estimated value of the stolen goods was around R20 000.
“An alert goes out to the community to be aware that some security guards are using their job to get away with stealing from the area they are meant to be guarding. People are to be alert,” said Manqele.
