Criminals pose as workers

Blue Security warns residents to be aware criminals are now wearing blue overalls to pose as workers, before committing crime.

CRIMINALS posing as workers wearing blue overalls have committed crimes ranging from housebreaking and theft to armed robbery in recent weeks in Durban.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said several incidents involving suspects wearing overalls had been reported to the company in Glenwood and Pinetown.

“Criminals wear these blue overalls in an effort to blend into the day to day rhythm of suburbs' business centres which at any given time may include workers like electricians and plumbers conducting repairs at homes and along the streets,” Jackson said.

He said Blue Security urged business owners and residents to be vigilant to this modus operandi which was designed to deceive victims into thinking suspects have legitimate business in the area.

Jackson said the latest incident in Lytton Road in Glenwood last week had involved a suspect who set off an alarm at 3am in the morning.

“Our reaction officer responded to an alarm and stopped the suspect who was fleeing from the premises when he arrived. He was dressed in a brown jacket and a two piece overall and claimed that he was going

to work,” Jackson said.

He said the reaction officer arrested the suspect as the property’s gate had been tampered with and there was an attempted break in into a neighbour's car.

In another incident in River Drive in Glenmore, two men wearing blue overalls entered a property via an unlocked gate and stole a bicycle.

Jackson added that last month two men dressed in overalls and white hats had held up a cashier at a garage convenience store in Westmead and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. The incident was reported

to the Pinetown SAPS.
