SEPTEMBER is Heritage Month and focus is on culture and tradition.
Martin Kriel, managing director of ADT Security’s east coast region, said in the same way that we share stories and other traditions with family and friends, we should share ways to keep each other and belongings safe and secure.
“By repeating certain activities and encouraging loved ones to do the same, they will eventually become second nature,” said Kriel.
He said these activities were as simple as making it a rule that the last person to leave the house must ensure the alarm system is armed.
“Other tips to follow and encourage include before anyone leaves home, they must walk through the house to double-check that all windows and doors are properly closed and locked from the inside. The alarm system and outdoor beams must always be armed overnight. Whenever anyone goes out, they must tell someone they trust where they plan to go and when they expect they will return home,” he said.
Kriel said people should not leave anything in the garden that an intruder could use as a weapon or to more easily gain access to the home.
If any suspicious individuals, behaviour or activities in the neighbourhood cause concern, immediately report them to the local South African Police Service or a security
service provider.
“The advice may seem simple but sharing it with family and friends can significantly enhance their safety,” said Kriel.
