TWO domestic workers were assaulted in separate housebreaking incidents in Glenmore last week.
According to Blue Security’s operations manager Brian Jackson said that in the first incident, housebreakers had cut the lock of a driveway gate to break into a property in Alkenaar Road at 11.34am.
“The gang confronted the domestic worker who was doing laundry and assaulted her with a crowbar. They fled with a television when they noticed a neighbour approaching the property,” he said.
The domestic worker was taken to hospital by ambulance to receive treatment for her injuries. Umbilo SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
Jackson said in the second incident last Tuesday, an armed reaction officer had responded to an alarm at a property in Wanless Road, after a resident pressed his panic button on his cellphone.
He said the resident had opened up his property to four men who he had believed were plumbers.
“The men then went upstairs with the domestic worker where they tried to strangle her. She managed to fight back and the resident pressed his panic button to alert us to the emergency. Our officer arrived within minutes and the men fled the scene with a gate remote.
Fortunately, the domestic worker was not seriously injured,” he said.
Umbilo SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
He said criminals take the time to observe what is happening at various properties, and target properties where they see contractors are working and where residents are repeatedly opening up to let them fetch tools from their vans.
“Always check to see who is ringing the bell and make sure that you ask to see the person’s professional identification card before opening up. If possible, allow the contractor to park his vehicle behind a locked gate,” Jackson said.
