Berea police stop bag-snatcher
Berea police officers went to the rescue of a woman last Thursday afternoon after she was mugged.
According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the woman was walking at the corner of Botanic Gardens and King Dinuzulu (Berea) Road when she was approached by two men. “One threatened her with a knife and the other grabbed her bag and they fled. The police who were patrolling the area noticed what had happened and gave chase and arrested the one suspect and recovered the bag and its contents,” explained Naidoo.
The suspect was charged for robbery and detained at Berea SAPS.
Man arrested for suspected stolen property
Berea police arrested a man for possession of suspected stolen goods at 4am on Friday.
According to Lt PN Naidoo, he was patrolling along Currie Road when he noticed a suspicious man carrying two cardboard boxes on his head. “When I stopped to question the suspect, he dropped the boxes and fled. I called for assistance and chased the suspect. He was arrested at the corner of Botanic Gardens and Mansfield Road with the help of Warrant Officer PM Gumede and Constable R Exford in another vehicle,” explained Naidoo.
The suspect, who is believed to be 22 years old, was taken back to the boxes which contained photo frames and books in one and a sewing machine and wool in another. “He could not give a reasonable explanation as to how he got the boxes and was detained,” he added.
Kitchen crook arrested
A Morningside man was shocked when he found a thief in his kitchen on Saturday afternoon.
Lt PN Naidoo said the man heard a noise in his Montpelier Road home and went to investigate when he came across the suspect in the kitchen. “When the suspect noticed the man, he fled. The police and ADT security were informed and responded immediately. The suspect was arrested and detained for housebreaking with intent,” Naidoo said.
Be crime Aware
Car related theft is a recurring crime and Berea police want to advise motorists to be extra vigilant about securing their vehicles especially as the festive season is fast approaching.
“Use parking inside complexes if possible and if parking on the road, park in well lit areas and do not leave valuables in vehicles,” said Lt Naidoo.
When travelling and you arrive home, Naidoo advised motorists to immediately take luggage out of the vehicle.
“Make sure the vehicle is physically locked when parking your vehicle, do not just press the remote and walk away.
Always be aware of your surroundings, you could be watched and when the opportunity arises, you could become a victim,” he added.
