A CRIMINAL who broke into Glenwood's Corner Cafe got more than he bargained for when he was shot in the leg by security in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Corner Cafe owner, Judd Campbell, considers himself lucky because it was the first time in seven years that the popular cafe was hit by crime. “Blue Security called me to let me know the alarm had been activated at about 4am and someone was on their way and they would call me if I needed to come down,” he said.
After 20 minutes, they called him back to let him know there was a break-in.
“What happened was this guy broke through one of our front windows, pushed through the glass and didn't realise he had triggered the silent alarm so he thought he had some time and shopped around. When he heard all the cars outside he tried to jump out through the bathroom window, to the back garden, onto the roof of an out-building and even cut himself on the razor wire of the fence trying to escape.
“When he came down, a Blue Security member thought he was reaching for a gun and shot him in the leg,” said Campbell.
After the man was seen to by paramedics, Campbell offered him coffee and breakfast but the suspect refused. “I asked him why he broke in and he said he didn't break-in. I suspect he was on whoonga,” added Campbell.
The suspect had tried to make off with an point of sale card machine.
Umbilo police arrested the man and investigations continue.
