TWO foreigners were arrested by Berea police in the Florida Road area on Monday afternoon after police received a tip off that they were selling fake gold.
According to Berea police communications officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the Congolese men had approached a restaurant owner in Florida Road last month.
“One of the men was known to the restaurant owner as he had frequented the restaurant. The two men told him that they had 50 grams of 24 carat gold which they wanted to sell to him,” explained Naidoo.
The men assured the Florida Road businessman that they were “licensed and authorised” to sell the gold. They worked out a payment plan and were to meet at the restaurant on Monday afternoon to close the deal and collect the money. The restaurant owner later had the gold tested and discovered it was bronze rather than gold.
“Police were made aware of the gold transaction taking place at the Florida Road restaurant and after the transaction took place they arrested the men for fraud,” he said.
