Bunny chow feeding scheme feeds hundreds

Street Bunny Fund held an outreach on Sunday handing out bunny chows to the less fortunate at Durban Beach Shelter, Umthombo and those around the area.

THE Street Bunny Fund is made up of a group of volunteers who feed the poor through the assistance of Sunrise Chip and Ranch (Johnny’s Rotis). The group held a feeding scheme along Durban’s beachfront on Sunday.

According to Street Bunny Fund’s Mike Mc Kenna, the idea to start the feeding scheme came recently after friend John Hough and he were treating themselves to a “Johnny’s Roti”. “We have been eating from Johnnys for almost 20 years and just recently, after being overseas for a few months, a Johnnys Rotti for lunch, was high on my agenda for a treat. I noticed a sign that spoke of their feeding scheme whereby they would produce 100 quarter Bunnys for R300,” said Mc Kenna.

McKenna said he immediately knew with bit of marketing, he’d be able to get some support and hopefully start feeding some hungry people on regular basis.

On Sunday they handed out 500 bunnies across Durban, some went to Durban Beach Shelter, Umthombo Street Children and the less fortunate around Addington and Greyville.

Mc Kenna said the aim of the Fund was to get regular monthly donations, so they could deliver food regularly to the same establishments. “I’m hoping as the words spreads and we receive more donations – we can assist more shelters. It’s also about encouraging people who have supported us to take an hour or two of their Sunday and hand out a few bunnies themselves, thus experiencing first hand how many hungry and needy people there are around town.

Varsha Birjanund, owner of Sunrise Chip and Ranch said her late father Manikchand (Baboo) started the feeding scheme at the Ark about 28 years ago on the Point. “We used to feed the shelters around town and did it frequently. Customers wanted to get involved so started a feeding scheme at a minimum cost where we don’t make a profit and customers can do a good deed and we feel good about doing it. On Saturday we did 2000 bunnies and today its 500.

“My dad, who died a six months ago, always said we had to have something reasonably priced for the man on the street. My dad’s philosophy was always to have something at a low price so even the lower income person can get a hot meal. We are just keeping his legacy alive,” she said.
